Background of the Study (400 words)

Elderly care is a growing concern in Nigeria due to the increasing aging population and the associated demand for long-term care services. Family caregivers and professional healthcare workers play a crucial role in providing care for older adults, often experiencing significant physical, emotional, and financial strain, known as caregiver burden (Abubakar & Yusuf, 2024). Caregiver burden encompasses the psychological distress, exhaustion, and financial difficulties that arise when caring for elderly individuals, particularly those with chronic illnesses or functional impairments (Ahmed et al., 2023).

Patient satisfaction, on the other hand, is a critical component of quality healthcare, reflecting patients' perceptions of the effectiveness, compassion, and responsiveness of the care they receive (Olawale, 2024). It serves as an essential metric in healthcare systems, influencing policy decisions and care delivery models. Despite its importance, few studies have explored the link between caregiver burden and patient satisfaction, especially in regions like Kebbi State, where cultural norms and socio-economic conditions play a pivotal role in elderly care (Ibrahim & Musa, 2025).

Research suggests that when caregivers experience high levels of stress and burden, the quality of care they provide may decline, leading to lower patient satisfaction (Suleiman, 2023). Overburdened caregivers may struggle to meet the emotional and physical needs of elderly patients, resulting in neglect, reduced engagement, and a decline in overall care quality. Conversely, well-supported caregivers with lower burden levels tend to exhibit more patience, empathy, and attentiveness, which positively influences patient satisfaction (Usman, 2024).

This study seeks to examine the correlation between caregiver burden and patient satisfaction in elderly care settings in Kebbi State. Understanding this relationship can help policymakers and healthcare providers develop interventions that reduce caregiver burden while improving patient outcomes. By exploring factors such as workload, financial strain, emotional stress, and support systems, this study will provide valuable insights into optimizing elderly care in Nigeria (Ahmed et al., 2023).

Statement of the Problem (300 words)

Caregiver burden is a significant issue in elderly care, yet its impact on patient satisfaction remains largely unexplored in Kebbi State. Many caregivers experience high levels of stress due to the demands of caring for elderly patients, often without adequate financial, emotional, or institutional support (Olawale, 2024). Overburdened caregivers may exhibit signs of burnout, emotional exhaustion, and reduced patience, potentially affecting the quality of care they provide.

Patient satisfaction is a crucial measure of healthcare quality, yet elderly patients in Nigeria often report dissatisfaction with the care they receive (Abubakar & Yusuf, 2024). Factors such as inadequate attention, delays in care, and lack of emotional support contribute to these low satisfaction levels. Given that caregivers are directly responsible for providing day-to-day assistance, their level of burden could significantly influence patient satisfaction. However, there is a lack of empirical research examining the link between these two variables in Kebbi State.

Failure to address caregiver burden may lead to negative outcomes such as increased caregiver burnout, reduced care quality, and poor patient experiences (Ahmed et al., 2023). Understanding how caregiver burden affects patient satisfaction is essential for developing targeted interventions that support caregivers while enhancing elderly care services. This study aims to fill this research gap by investigating the correlation between caregiver burden and patient satisfaction among elderly individuals in Kebbi State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of caregiver burden in elderly care settings in Kebbi State.

2. To evaluate the level of patient satisfaction in relation to caregiver burden.

3. To determine the correlation between caregiver burden and patient satisfaction.

Research Questions

1. What is the extent of caregiver burden in elderly care in Kebbi State?

2. How satisfied are elderly patients with the care they receive?

3. What is the relationship between caregiver burden and patient satisfaction?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₀: There is no significant correlation between caregiver burden and patient satisfaction.

2. H₀: Caregiver burden does not significantly affect patient satisfaction levels.

3. H₀: Socio-economic factors do not significantly moderate the relationship between caregiver burden and patient satisfaction.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on caregivers providing care for elderly patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and home settings in Kebbi State. Limitations include self-reported data, which may be subject to bias, and difficulties in quantifying caregiver burden and patient satisfaction due to subjective variations.

Definitions of Terms

• Caregiver Burden: The physical, emotional, and financial strain experienced by individuals providing care for elderly patients.

• Patient Satisfaction: The degree to which elderly patients perceive their care as meeting their needs and expectations.

• Elderly Care: Health and social services provided to individuals aged 60 and above.
